Activist/Philanthropist Adele Smithers dies at 83

Adele Smithers, a central figure in the history of the Rutgers Center of Alcohol Studies and in the field of addiction, died last week from complications related to Parkinson’s disease.

Mrs. Smithers had the vision to see ‘alcoholism’ as a disease from which people can recover and go on to live healthy and productive lives. Many of today’s cultural perspectives on alcoholism – as a treatable and preventable disease – can be directly tied to Mrs. Smithers’ and the Christopher D. Smithers Foundation’s activism, advocacy, and generosity towards individuals and families who struggle with alcohol use disorders.
