Helene R. White is a Distinguished Professor Emerita of Sociology having held a joint appointment in the Rutgers Center of Alcohol and Substance Use Studies and Sociology Department until she retired in 2019. She received her Ph.D. from Rutgers University in Sociology. Her research focuses on the development, causes, consequences, comorbidity, and prevention of substance use and other problem behaviors (e.g., violence, delinquency, crime, and mental health problems) using longitudinal data from community and at-risk samples. Dr. White’s research had been funded continuously by NIH from the late 1970s through 2021. Currently, she is MPI on a study examining simultaneous alcohol and marijuana use among college students and consulting on a few other longitudinal studies on substance use development and prevention. Dr. White has co-authored one book, co-edited three others, and published more than 200 articles and chapters and is listed on the Web of Science Highly Cited list. She is a Fellow of the Society for Prevention Research and the American Society of Criminology and has won several awards for her scholarship.
