Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs turns 85
The Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs (JSAD), the oldest U.S. journal dedicated to substance use research, celebrates its 85th anniversary. Founded at Yale in 1940 and later moved to Rutgers as the Rutgers Center of Alcohol Studies, (now the Center of Alcohol and Substance Use Studies, CAS) JSAD has evolved from focusing solely on alcohol to covering a broad range of substance-related issues. Published by Rutgers’ CAS, the journal has contributed significantly to the field, including early work on alcohol testing devices and influential research that helped shape national policy. Recent high-impact publications, such as a 2024 study concluding that no level of alcohol use is safe and a 2025 critique of law enforcement marijuana impairment testing, underscore JSAD’s continued relevance. The journal remains independent, nonprofit, and widely respected for its rigorous, multidisciplinary scholarship.
