Helene R. White

Distinguished Professor
SMH 205A/B

Helene R. White is a Distinguished Professor of Sociology with a joint appointment in the Center and the Sociology Department. Her research focuses on the development, causes, consequences, comorbidity, and prevention of substance use and other problem behaviors (e.g., violence, delinquency, crime, and mental health problems) using longitudinal data from community and at-risk samples. Her research has been continuously funded by NIH since the late 1970s. Currently, she is co-Principal Investigator on a NIDA-funded study examining predictors and consequences of marijuana use from childhood into young adulthood and Multiple Principal Investigator on another NIDA-funded study examining simultaneous alcohol and marijuana use. Dr. White collaborates on several other longitudinal studies across the U.S. She has co-authored one book, co-edited three others, and published more than 200 articles and chapters.

Current Research

  • Patterns, predictors, and consequences of simultaneous alcohol and marijuana use.
  • The interactions of individual and environmental factors and how they shape the development of substance use and criminal behavior, emphasizing the role of childhood and adolescent risk and protective factors on the development of these behaviors over the life course.
  • The proximal and developmental associations between alcohol/drug use and many forms of violence (including street violence, intimate partner violence, and child maltreatment).
  • Racial differences in developmental patterns, predictors, and consequences of substance use during adolescence and the transition from adolescence into young adulthood.
  • Substance use prevention on college campuses.
