Dr. Ray joined the Cognitive Neuroscience Research group in November, 2000. She is currently a Principal Investigator of a National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) supported research project that is examining neural mechanisms that underlie implicit and explicit memory processes in chronic cocaine smokers compared to high- and low-risk individuals by using cognitive experimental tasks and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Brain regions of interest (ROIs) and connectivity between brain regions will be examined.
She is also a co-Investigator of a National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) funded project that is examining a dynamic neurocardiac system that modulates reactivity to alcohol cues, and whether an experimental manipulation of the neurocardiac feedback loop can be used to dampen reactivity to cues at the level of the brain.
|Aim #1: To characterize neural mechanisms that underlie implicit and explicit memory processes in chronic cocaine smokers compared to high- and low-risk individuals by using cognitive experimental tasks and fMRI. Brain regions of interest and connectivity between brain regions (multiple ways) will be examined.|
|Aim #2: To investigate how the neural mechanisms that underlie implicit and explicit memory processes in high-risk individuals and chronic cocaine smokers are affected by cognitive manipulation using experimental tasks, and fMRI that utilizes brain regions of interest and multiple connectivity analysis approaches.|
|Aim #1: To examine interconnected brain region activation in response to alcohol-related picture cues, the dynamic relation between neural activation and cardiovascular modulation, and how these differ between emerging adults with alcohol dependence and those who are moderate drinkers.|
|Aim #2: To explore whether an experimental manipulation of slow breathing that produces a generalized inhibitory effect on the brain can be used to modulate alcohol cue reactivity.|
