The Connection between Domestic Violence and Addiction (Trauma & Substance Use Certificate)

May 12, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

$125.00

Instructor: Aja Harrison, MSW

This class is offered in a virtual format. In the mental health and addiction fields there is often some sense of unknowing, fear, discomfort, and judgment towards Domestic or Interpersonal violence.  Through this session we hope to acknowledge the fear by learning the causes of DV, address our preconceptions, and demystify the treatment by addressing best practices and treatment strategies.  We will explore our own biases and their impact on treating clients as well as the systemic impact of DV on individual clients and family members.  The links between Domestic Violence and substance use will also be explored as will proactive & reactive measures to address practitioner self-care & burn-out.  According to ASAM, substance use occurs in 40 gto 60% of Domestic Violence cases and experiencing DV has been indicated as a risk factor for developing a substance use disorder.  According to ASAM’s best practices, DV & substance use should be concurrently addressed/ treated to minimize the risk of slowed treatment, relapse, and potential early withdrawal from treatment.
