Trauma & Substance Use Certificate

Instructor: Dr. Debra Ruisard, DSW, LCSW, LCADC

Complex Trauma is a two-part workshop offered in a virtual format. This workshop will examine the treatment of complex trauma, beginning with the Phase-Oriented Treatment Model and relational approach which provide structure and clinical guidelines for maintaining safety in the treatment of trauma-spectrum problems.  Additional evidence-based treatment models, such as cognitive processing therapy, sensorimotor psychotherapy and EMDR will be reviewed as examples of therapeutic approaches that can be integrated within the phase- oriented model. Case vignettes and experiential exercises will be used to enhance understanding of the concepts. Managing transference and countertransference reactions in complex trauma will be discussed. Research on Trauma-specific treatment interventions will be explored including the role of body oriented and neurologically based therapies to resolve the traumatic past, self-regulation, mindfulness, and alternatives to drug and talk therapy.  The relationship between complex trauma and substance use disorders will be explored along with research on resilience, and the role it plays in complex trauma interventions. Cultural considerations in responsive trauma treatment will be reviewed.
