The CAPTAIN Program

The CAPTAIN Program (Certificate for Advanced Police Training on Addiction Interventions)

The CAPTAIN program was launched in October 2016 to enhance community efforts and combat the heroin and opioid epidemic. This program includes two elements:

* A free training delivered at police stations across New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. This training provides an overview of current strategies being used to engage and help individuals under the influence of alcohol and drugs, to identify those with substance use disorders who are in need of immediate treatment, to de-stigmatize substance misuse by understanding how the brain becomes hijacked by drugs and alcohol, and to move a person towards treatment. Law enforcement agencies interested in this program should contact the Rutgers Center of Alcohol Studies at 848-445-4317 or cas_ed@rutgers.edu

* A 2-day Train the Trainer certificate course. This 16-hour course will be held at the Rutgers Center of Alcohol Studies in Piscataway, NJ which will host addiction, legal, and police experts. Discuss addiction programs currently available to assist law enforcement and how to determine which one will work best in your community. Understand stages of change and their relation to drug seeking behavior and intervention strategies. Explore the link between stigma and recidivism.

This training is a component of a community-based recidivism prevention project supported, in part, by an Endowment from the Christopher D. Smithers Foundation to the Center of Alcohol Studies, Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey.
