Director, Office of Professional Development and Continuing Education

The Director of the Office of Professional Development and Continuing Education holds a key strategic position within the Center of Alcohol Studies (CAS), the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology (GSAPP), and the University.  The Director is a member of CAS and GSAPP's Senior Management Team, along with the Dean, Director, and Department Chairs, and is responsible for the administration and programs of the Office of Professional Development and Continuing Education.

Reporting directly to the Director of CAS, the Director of the Office of Professional Development and Continuing Education's primary responsibilities include developing long-term strategic plans for the organization, securing contracts and grant funding, overall management of administrative staff and division finances, and creating new training experiences in addictions and psychology. The Director will provide support and effective leadership across all division projects and activities, including management of staff duties; setting work priorities; completion of time sensitive deadlines; and, initiating and promoting new ideas and materials to enhance existing projects and those under development. The Director will assist with the development of curriculum and conceptualization of learning approaches, and will build out the web-based distance learning platform, suitable for a range of educational consumers and program goals. The Director will promote the professionalism of the division by functioning as a strong administrator capable of presenting as a sophisticated representative of the division within and outside of Rutgers, GSAPP, and the Center of Alcohol Studies. The Director the Office of Professional Development and Continuing Education will liaise with the larger university’s faculty, staff, and administrators; with key stakeholders including grantors; and especially with consumers of our educational products.

The Director will develop new and secure existing contracts and grants, and provide leadership and vision to the Division's programs and initiatives. The Director is involved in both new grant submissions and managing existing contracts and grants to ensure continued funding. The Director will lead the development of proposals to foundations, government agencies, and other sponsors to support core functions of the Division, CAS, and GSAPP, and serve as principal investigator. The Director is expected to assume leadership in writing major collaborative grants.   

The Director is responsible for maintaining and strengthening the existing partnerships with the State of NJ agencies, and seeking new collaborations. The development of new projects and training programs requires reaching out to our partners/collaborators at the State and national level to assess their training needs and their needs for low cost service delivery. This includes working as a liaison with the NJ state associations regarding state licensing issues and policies, refining means of measuring practicum opportunities and training outcomes for students, and forming alliances with key state administrators, legislative aides, and representatives of the private and nonprofit sectors, especially in New Jersey, but in other states as well.

  • Provides management direction for all the professional development and continuing education operations, both onsite and web-based.
  • Directs and oversee the Division's budget, manages projects, and is responsible for the timely and accurate narrative and financial reporting required by all funders and the Division of Grant and Contract Accounting.
  • Works with the CAS Director and GSAPP Dean regarding financial planning and projections.
  • Manages staff in the major functional areas of the Division and projects associated with the principal mission, objectives, and training activities of the Center.
  • Supervises and oversees the work of administrative staff and training faculty in financial operations, administration, and grant and program development.
  • Supervises all recruitment, selection, hiring, and upgrades. Ensure Division is in compliance with personnel policies including but not limited to affirmative action, ADA, EEO, and workplace diversity.
  • Supervises all Staff Compensation Program activities.
  • Manages staff development.
  • Directs strategic planning and outreach, and is responsible for the delivery of all educational materials including: web-based, hybrid, on-site and off-site trainings, meetings, and conference presentations.
  • Works to maintain the Division's reputation as a professional training center, advancing the education and experience of professionals and students.
  • Coordinates independently and effectively with other senior managers throughout the University to collaborate and garner necessary resources for joint projects and activities.
  • Participates in the strategic planning for the school and has a major role in developing and overseeing outreach strategies.
  • Works in collaboration with GSAPP's Department Chairs and Program Directors to develop improvements to the Center's operating procedures and implement strategies for assuring that the Center is well positioned to address vital issues in training professional candidates in recertification, and training doctoral level students with direction in outreach to the community.

Requires a Ph.D. in education, social sciences, or related field, and three years prior experience administering education and training programs, or an Masters-level degree in these areas with at least five years of relevant experience with grant writing, curriculum development, and educational programming. Ability to write proposals and secure federal, state, and private foundation grants; develop innovative and entrepreneurial avenues for new training programs; and supervise staff and training faculty. Some experience with hybrid, distance learning approaches is a plus.

Assistant or Associate Professor (Tenure-Track), Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology, Master’s in Applied Psychology Program, Rutgers University.

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an assistant or associate professor level tenure track faculty member for our Master’s in Applied Psychology Program (MAP) housed in The Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology (GSAPP) and the Center of Alcohol Studies. This faculty member, with an expertise in substance use disorders, will develop the alcohol and drug use curriculum for the new Master’s Program concentration in alcohol and substance use disorders, and provide support to the Director of the MAP program as well as the Director of the Center of Alcohol Studies.

Master’s Program Description
The 42-credit Master’s of Applied Psychology (MAP) offers instruction in foundational knowledge of the scientific basis of psychology, education and training in applied areas of psychology. This course of study provides students with knowledge needed to understand individual and collective behaviors; develop quantitative and qualitative statistical analysis and research design needed to analyze the corresponding physical and environmental contributors to human behavior; and a beginning understanding of the analysis and treatment of behavior problems and disorders, including a concentration in substance use disorders

The Center of Alcohol Studies (CAS) is a multidisciplinary research and training institute located on the Busch Campus of Rutgers University, which performs clinical and biomedical research on alcohol and substance use disorders. The center originated at Yale University before it moved to Rutgers in 1962. The CAS serves as a home to clinical and biomedical researchers and clinical practitioners across Rutgers University schools and programs, as well as an illustrious group of affiliated scientists outside of the university.

The Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology at Rutgers University invites applicants for a tenure-track faculty appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank to serve as a lead faculty member for the Concentration of Alcohol and Drug Use Disorders in the Master’s Program in Applied Psychology.

Primary Responsibilities include: 1) serving as a core faculty member for the concentration in alcohol and drug use disorders of the Master’s Program in Applied Psychology; 2) assisting with the development, implementation, and evaluation of the core curriculum in alcohol and drug use disorders; 3) serving as a research scientist in the Center of Alcohol Studies, directly assisting the Director of the Center with implementing the mission of the Center.

Minimum Education and Experience

The successful candidate is expected to:

  •  Have a doctorate in Clinical Psychology
  • A strong record of scholarship
  • An active program of research and publications in alcohol and/or drug studies
  • Experience with curriculum development in the area of substance use disorders
  • Teaching at an undergraduate and graduate level as well as professional experience
  • Experience with online as well as on ground teaching formats.
  • Excellent organizational skills.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Clinician-scientist with a successful history of research, teaching, and mentoring of students
  • Academic and curriculum development experience in the area of substance use disorders
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to be flexible and working in an environment of expansion and change
  • Candidates will be expected to develop and maintain an active, extramurally funded research program. 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to 

  • Work with the MAP Director to establish program teaching assignments relative to the substance abuse curriculum.
  • Serve as faculty advisor to students, coordinate and evaluate academic advising of students.
  • Review, approve, and file course syllabi for the substance use disorder curriculum of the Program
  • Participate in research and writing requested and necessary self-study or program-related reports.
  • Work with the Center of Alcohol Studies director to coordinate substance use related shared educational and research goals for projects across GSAPP and CAS.
