| Q-Where is the Center of Alcohol Studies Library? | ||
| The Center of Alcohol Studies Library is located within the Center of Alcohol Studies, Brinkley & Adele Smithers Hall, Room 340, , Rutgers, the State University, 607 Alison Road, Piscataway, New Jersey 08854-8001. Our phone number is 732-445-4442. | ||
| Q-How do I get to the CAS Library? | ||
| There are several options available to reach the library. | ||
| By Car: | ||
| If you drive you can park in the Library of Science and Medicine (LSM) parking lot, but must obtain a parking permit from the CAS Library. The LSM and adjoining parking lot are located along 165 Bevier Road, Piscataway, New Jersey, right around the corner from the CAS Library. | ||
| By Bus: | ||
| You can take the A Bus from College Avenue to the Center of Alcohol Studies, by exiting at the Hill Center stop. Additional information about Rutgers transit can be found on the Rutgers Parking Authority site. | ||
| Q-When is the Center of Alcohol Studies Library open? | ||
The library is open normal business hours (9am-5pm) Monday through Thursday and 9am-4:30pm on Friday. The library is closed Saturday and Sunday. |

| Q-What books and journals are located within the CAS Library? | ||
The library’s holdings are cataloged and searchable using IRIS (Rutgers Libraries’ Catalog). Use the Advanced Search. Select either “ALCOHOL” or “ALCOHOL/NJ” from the “library” pull-down menu. The library collects materials related to alcohol use/abuse and history. As a general rule, if you are searching for a book about alcohol it is likely located the CAS Library. |

| Q-I am a Rutgers student/faculty/staff, can I check out a book? | ||
Yes. All privileges afforded to Rutgers students, faculty and staff at the other RU Libraries are granted at the Center of Alcohol Studies Library. Books held by the CAS library can be requested through the Rutgers University Libraries. |

| Q-I am a non-Rutgers user/clinician/member of the public/visiting scholar, can I borrow books or use library material collections? | ||
| Yes. For certain types of users, detailed borrowing policies can be found on the home page of Rutgers University Libraries. Non-Rutgers users are also welcome, please read our Guest Borrowing Policies. Circulating materials can be checked out for one month at the Circulation Desk. To request a guest library card, please visit the CAS Library during open hours. | ||
| Q-If the Library has a resource, but I am unable to visit the facility, how can I get a copy ? | ||
| Articles: The CAS Library works with the Journal of the Study on Alcohol and Drugs (JSAD) to fulfill customer requests. You can purchase articles on the JSAD web site, currently from 1075 to date. If you need an article prior to 1975, please call (732-445-4442) or email (alclib@rci.rutgers.edu) and we can fill your article request. Cost for JSAD articles is $15.00 per article. Please allow 1-3 business days for delivery. |

| Q-What tools are available for researchers in the CAS Library? | ||
The following resources are available to guests at the library: Public computers with internet access and Word Pad for typing A printer connected to the public computers A coin operated photocopier (the library’s photocopier does not accept RUL copy cards) Access to numerous databases including: The Alcohol Studies Database, The Alcohol History Database, as well as, databases provided by the university and specific to the CAS. | Q-Can the librarians at the Center of Alcohol Studies Library help me with my research? | ||
| Of course they can. You can call, email or visit and they will help you with your inquiry. However, the librarians cannot do your research for you; they can guide you or offer advice, but cannot do your work for you. The librarians are not doctors or lawyers and cannot offer medical or legal advice. | ||
| Q-I am a non-Rutgers user/clinician/member of the public/visiting scholar, can I borrow books or use library material collections? | ||
| Yes. Guest borrowing privileges are offered to the public. We honor general library privileges for Rutgers alumni, individuals with community borrower cards, faculty, and students from other higher education institutions. | Q-How do I register for guest privileges at the Library? How do I acquire a Guest borrower card? | ||
Guests may register in person at the circulation desk of the Center of Alcohol Studies Library with picture identification during regular library hours. Guests to the library may borrow items, when they purchase a guest borrower card. For more information please read our Guest Borrowing Policies. |

| CAS Library Guest borrower cards are issued for a period of one year. The cost for the first year is $50. Guests must renew their privileges on a yearly basis, without a fee. After the first year, if there are no outstanding costs, such as lost books, recall fines, etc. $25 will be refunded to guest-patron. Please note: these library cards are kept in the Alcohol Library. These privileges are for the Alcohol Studies Library ONLY! See Rutgers University Libraries borrowing privileges. | ||
| What are my responsibilities as a Guest Borrower? | ||
| You are responsible for: • All material checked out on your card. Do not loan it to others. • Remembering due dates. Dates may change based on renewal and recall requests. • Returning or renewing materials on time. • Notifying the Library of any change of address. |

| What is the loan period for Guest Borrowers? | ||
| The guest loan period is 28 days for all materials charged out. All books, regardless of loan period and borrower's privileges, are subject to recall. You may check out up to 25 items on your card at one time. For more information please read our Guest Borrowing Policies. | ||
| Where do Guest Borrowers return books and other materials? | ||
| Return borrowed books on or before their due date to the Center of Alcohol Studies Library or a circulation desk or a book drop of any Rutgers library. Failure to return a recalled book will result in a fine of $5 per day. For more information please read our Guest Borrowing Policies. |

| It is expected that books and other library materials will be returned in good condition, unmarked and without evidence of damage. Borrowers will be held responsible for materials returned damaged. If the book you wish to charge out is already damaged, please bring it to the attention of the circulation desk staff, who will make note of the damage so that you will not be held responsible. | ||
| Can Guest Borrowers Renew Books? | ||
| Yes. Materials may be renewed for the same time period as the original loan. If materials are more than forty days overdue you must bring them to a Rutgers library to be renewed. There is no mail or telephone renewal. You may not renew library materials that have been recalled for another borrower, or if your borrowing privileges have been suspended. | ||
| What about recalls? | ||
| Students, faculty and staff at Rutgers may recall items needed for research. Guest borrowers are not eligible for recall privileges. All books in circulation are subject to recall. You may receive a "Recall Notice" notifying you to return materials prior to the normal loan period. | ||
| Return a recalled item before the new date set by the library to avoid paying a fine. A fine of $5 per day up to $50 will be assessed and borrowing privileges suspended for failure to return recalled material on time. | ||
| Does the library notify me if my book is overdue? | ||
| Yes, but it is ultimately your responsibility to return books on time. Library notices will be sent to your email address on file with the libraries. If you don't have email, paper notices will be mailed to your home address. |

| An Overdue Notice is sent when items are 7 days overdue. At 21 days overdue, a Final Notice stating the average replacement and processing cost of $102.00 per item is sent. Contact the Center of Alcohol Studies Library for the actual cost of replacement. Your borrowing privileges will be suspended and a hold may be placed on your library record. When items are six months overdue, a Bill for Replacement is sent. The University reserves the right to forward all delinquent accounts to collection agencies and to levy a collection fee. | ||
| How do I change my address (geographic or virtual) on my Guest Borrower card? | ||
| It is your responsibility to keep the Center of Alcohol Studies Library informed of any address changes. Library fines will not be waived if you fail to notify the Library of a change of address. You can update your address and email address with library staff at the circulation desk or by email. | ||
| Are Guest Borrowers eligible for interlibrary loan? | ||
| Guest borrowers are not eligible for interlibrary loan and recalls, delivery of Rutgers materials, and borrowing privileges at the Rutgers law libraries. |

Do Guest Borrowers have database access from home? | |
| Guest borrowers are not entitled to off-campus access to certain databases. Licensing agreements between the Rutgers University Libraries and proprietors of certain databases strictly limit off-site use to current Rutgers students, faculty, and staff. | ||
