CLINICAL TRAINING

Rutgers Advanced Training Program in Clinical Research, funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 9/28/94-8/30/04, Barbara S. McCrady, Principal Investigator. The Rutgers Center of Alcohol Studies has a pre-doctoral training program to train clinical psychologists in the issues and methods of clinical alcohol research, including nosological research, randomized clinical trials, program evaluation research, and health services research. Six pre-doctoral trainees are drawn from two programs at Rutgers University - The Clinical Psychology Training Program in the Psychology Department (Ph.D. candidates), and the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology (GSAPP) (Psy.D. candidates). Faculty are drawn from several units of the University and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey - Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Research Opportunities
Matriculated graduate students conduct research under the supervision of Clinical Division faculty. Opportunities exist to learn structured research interviewing, methods and procedures for the conduct of randomized clinical trials and health services research studies, and advanced statistical techniques. Most graduate students work on Federally-funded research programs, but also may initiate and conduct their own original research. Faculty in the clinical division are members of the graduate faculties in the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology and the Department of Psychology, and most graduate students supervised are matriculated in one of these two graduate training programs. Limited opportunities for supervision of students matriculated in other graduate programs at Rutgers may be available.

Clinical Training
Clinical practicum training is offered through the CAS Program for Addictions Consultation and Treatment (PACT), a specialty outpatient addictions treatment program run through the Psychological Clinic at the Rutgers Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology. Clinical training and practicum experiences for matriculated doctoral students in clinical psychology are available at Rutgers University. Students receive training in a broad range of addictions assessment and treatments from within a cognitive-behavioral perspective.

Training focuses on behavioral skills training, relapse prevention training using Marlatt & Gordon's cognitive-behavioral model, motivational interventions, behavioral couples therapy, and behavioral group therapy. Trainees are supervised by licensed practitioners in clinical psychology, and participate in weekly staff meetings, and in-service educational programs.

Undergraduate Research Opportunities, all faculty. Independent study and research opportunities are available to undergraduates who wish to develop knowledge and research skills related to the conduct of research with clinical populations with alcohol and drug problems. Undergraduates may be involved with any of the clinical research studies described.

Postgraduate Research Opportunities
There is no formal post-doctoral training program in clinical research at CAS. However, individual post-doctoral fellows are at times funded through specific research grants.
